I would presume that anyone could obtain the necessary equipment to  
extract the biometric details from the card, in order to satisfy  
themselves that the guy proferring the card was indeed the true owner of  
it. Otherwise, I cannot see that the card will be of much use for general  
identity confirmation, as is intended eventually.

But checking the central database is another matter, and should be  
restricted to those so authorised.

Does anyone know whether it is possoble for anyone (with suitable  
equipment) to view the biometric data (mainly a photograph AIUI) on the  
current British Passports?
