MJD Brown makes a good point about complying with other's spec's, even
if those specs make little sense.
But do not forget that flash drives often use "wear leveling", so file
wiping and drive wiping might not be as effective as people want.
Luckily they're cheap and flimsy, so physical destruction is easy.
Watch out for regs about handling lead.
