there's absolutely no question as to the pointlessness of it - however  
where it might have started by solicitors trying to do basic CYA at  
FSA regulated firms, this has spread to other parts of the industry  
because people think it's a 'good idea' - considering it free legal  
advice, perhaps. hence the viral nature of its spread.
