The main purpose of these blanket "legal" sig files is to put any 
recipient on notice that the email may be subject to legal professional 
privilege and, as some of you have spotted,  to restrict their use in 
any subsequent legal proceedings.    Much of my professional 
correspondence falls into this category as by far my biggest source of 
income comes from lawyers. 

It is quite true to say that the impact of such a sig file may become 
modified by particular circumstances,  but the general claim of legal 
privilege has nevertheless been made.  Lawyers are always concerned that 
privilege may be inadvertently "waived" or contracts and obligations 
implied.

If I want proper confidentiality I use encryption.
