And because of sections 83 and 171 of the 1974 Consumer Credit Act, 
which unambiguously state that the card issuer cannot require the 
cardholder to pay for a transaction unless the issuer can prove that the 
cardholder authorised it (or authorised somebody else to authorise it). 
  Apart from the first £X, where these days I believe X=50, ICBW.
