Or, alternatively, you could keep a couple of cheques in your wallet 
against such an emergency, or the school could set up a system to email 
parents when the kids' lunch money balance is getting low (since I'm 
being told that school management information systems are capable of all 
sorts of wonderful things), or you could just routinely hand over a 
cheque for x amount once a fortnight/month.

They may be over for *you*. I think it's perfectly reasonable not to be 
willing to trust online banking yet.
