An interesting article at
<http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/government-black-boxes-
will-collect-every-email-992268.html> on the latest attempt by the Home
Office to put us all in more of an open prison than they already have.
The bit which struck me is, "He added: "They said they only wanted to
return to a position they were in before the emergence of internet
communication, when they were able to monitor all correspondence with a
police suspect." "He", being, "a source close to the meeting".
Obviously this is a blatant lie, as one would expect from the Home
Office. "They" were never able to monitor all correspondence with a
suspect, unless "they" stole all letters from couriers and were in a
position to identify all dead letter drops.
As well as being a blatant lie the statement is an example of New
Labour spin, as one would expect from the Home Office. What the spin
fails to identify is that "they" would never have been able to spy on
everyone at once. "They" were limited by the number of humans "they"
could field to intercept letters. This is the equivalent of
interceptiong all letters and copying at least parts of them. "They"
were never able to do this in some fabled past, "before the emergence
of internet communication".
