A recent item on Jonathan Calder's blog pointed me to the two TV series
of ‘1990’ that were aired in 1977/8: it predicted the state of things by
1990. Go to:
http://liberalengland.blogspot.com/search/label/Television and look for
the March 03, 2008 entry.

In the comments is a link to http://www.eclectica.info/index.php?id=161,
in which one para reads:
“The subplot of the finale is good too, as the PCD (Public Control
Department) come up with a unified ID system, doing away with ration
cards, identity cards, driving licenses et al, and combining them in one
document designed to put an end to the black market but which,
brilliantly, is so easy to forge that it brings down the economy. Again.
It’s the first time this vision of the future feels genuinely prescient.”
