Germany strikes down indiscriminate use of Automated License Plate Recognition technology

I shouldn't be surprised at how easy this is, but I am.

I noticed the other day that my local Sainsburys is using it to time how 
long cars stay in the car park... and it occurred to me that here was 
technology beyond orwell's worst nightmare, and apparently its now cheap 
enough to be used to check people don't use the supermarket as free parking.
