Indeed. Whenever anybody brings up the "repressive regimes don't care  
about the legal niceties" argument I'm reminded to what lengths the  
Nazis went to ensure that they did was 'legal'. The minutes of the  
Wannsee conference, where the Nazis were designing the 'final  
solution', are littered with references to the legal status of  
various types of Jew, half-Jew etc.*

* I'm with Wendy as far as Godwin's Law is concerned. When you're  
talking about state oppression (or whatever you want to call it) the  
Nazi regime is exactly one of the places you should go for source  
material. Those who don't learn history...
