selftrade.co.uk have recently announced Verified by Visa for card payments
into trading accounts and told me:
    Unfortunately, you are unable to opt out of this new scheme if your
    card issuer has opted in. I hope this helps.
although I didn't put a lot of argument into it; using a short request
containing the word "rubbish".

You could also ask your bank whether their internal systems are secured
better or worse than they expect of customers' home computers.
