Like any organisation which has never been confronted with "the real
world" the police have an inflated view of themselves. That is why we
had the spectacle of a number of police officers being asked at the
inquest into the Stockwell murder, "what went wrong?" Every one of them
replied, "nothing went wrong", or words to that effect. If it wasn't so
serious it would be hilarious and the rest of us could piss ourselves
laughing.
