It can be more secure, particularly if you use SELinux (as a non-Ubuntu
user I don't know how easy it is to install and configure this) in
enforcing mode and you are careful in general and know which daemons
can make you vulnerable and how to ensure other permissions are set
properly.
In general Unix systems have significant privilege separation in a way
that most Windows systems don't, but of course that's a general comment.
FWIW Ubuntu is more towards the laissez-faire end of Linux distros than
towards the secure end. How easy it is to change that again I don't
know.
