And this is one of the problems. Bandwidth guarantees (not merely targets o=
r statements about typical or average experiences) cost money to provide, a=
nd don't fall into line with what many consumers think they should pay for =
broadband. There are plenty of these products available from many ISPs, inc=
luding 1:1 uncontended products for those who really want to be able to run=
their line at line-rate the whole time.=20
At the other end of the scale, there are products designed for consumers wh=
o want a "free" service bundled with something else, or costing only GBP10 =
- there are at least 10 brands that beat this price today (headline rate, i=
gnoring small print such as limited time offers, requirements to buy other =
products such as voice services etc). It's not a surprise to me that some o=
f these products don't give full line rate downloads all (or, perhaps, any)=
of the time, and I don't think that average consumers should really expect=
the GBP10 product to perform the same as the GBP100+ product (once someone=
explains to them that it exists).
