Anyone know more about this BT "uk identity verification" scheme?

Its just taken me around half an hour to get through to my gas supplier
- the previous occupants of the house had told me it was British Gas,
when it wasn't....

However as part of this I talked to Transco.... who just gave me the
meter reference point number of the property - and I didn't even ask for
it.

I'm off to steal my identity back.
