I agree with your views on the subject.
Two examples of spurious accuracy. One is quoting the length of
bridges in millimetres, which I have seen on drawings of suspension
bridges. Whoever did it doesn't have a clue about engineering. The
second is in the 1913 proposals to electrifiy the railway line from
Kings Cross in London. The overall length of a 16 coach train is
quoted to the nearest 1/8 of an inch (or is it 1/16, I can't
remember). Individual buffers could move by an inch or two without
rough handling, a 15-30" change in the length of the train under
normal operating.
