Sprinklers are not as clear cut as some claim. Pressure for them
normally comes from the manufacturers, who have a well organised
lobby that swings into action after any big fire. They did just this
after the fire at the Yarls Wood concentration camp and it is not the
first time I have noted them touting for business.

Fire brigades tend to advocate sprinklers, but they are only looking
at a narrow issue and not at the true costs and benefits of such an
installation. Building owners have to address these wider issues,
fire brigades do not.

Although sprinkler systems show more advantages and less
disadvantages than they did two or three decades ago the issue is
still not clear cut. In many circumstances it is far better to spend
money on making as sure one can be that everyone can get out and then
letting the building burn down.
