*The* reference on this is Organick's "A Programmer's View of the Intel 432
System". The design was extremely ambitious, meaning either very cool or
unworkable, depending on your point of view (let's say it was a cool design
but difficult to reduce into practice, and by the time they got to A0 silicon
it had been demolished by the x86 -> 286 -> 386 steamroller). The book's
worth a read though if you're interested in that sort of thing.
There was a successor project, BiiN, done in collaboration with Siemens, but
little documentation survives apart from some research papers from around the
1990 time frame.
