Last time I looked, a "Principal" was considered senior to a "Senior
Executive Officer"' and the rank equivalence for "Principal" was well
known.  Maybe Senior Executive Officers have become much more senior than
they were in my youth?

Equating public "service" snooper ranks and SS ranks (perhaps the most
appropriate comparison in the current context), I would guess SEO =
Hauptsturmfuhrer; it seems extremely unlikely that SEO =
Obersturmbannfuhrer, as suggested above.
