The layout of documents contains information that can be important and I
would not want a format used that discards this.

And excellent at maintaining the form of documents.  I agree that it can
produce large files but this is rarely excessive when compared with other
formats that preserve appearance.

Its not that hard to edit PDF files.

My guess from this discussion is that more than one format will be needed in
order to satisfy most people.
