There is no need. It is the information that matters, not how it 
looks.

It's excellent at producing bloated files that take a long time to 
download.

It's advantages, assuming a belief that it doesn't matter what 
information looks like, are to do with control of modifications 
(though no doubt this can be broken if necessary).
