I seem to remember that Crypto AG were selling a "secure" mobile at
one time... People went to considerable trouble to install back doors
in that. It wasn't just government pressure, it was actual
infiltration by agents, if I have remembered the story right.
Don't forget as well that the legal powers only really work when the
encryption isn't end to end. They could ask one of the end users for
the encryption key, but they would much rather intercept traffic without
tipping anyone off.
