But RIPA has succeeded. It is now law. People are now just arguing about
who should be on the list. But the snooping is happening and IMO we now
desperately need easy-to-use public key encrption to be used routinely in
emails to defeat RIPA. 

Certain laws are mistakes and I think it is the destiny of each western
country to repeat those mistakes for itself. So rest assured, the US will
almost certainly make this mistake too. What I believe we need to do is
continue to point out what a dreadful mistake it is but also to take
countermeasures such as public key crypto with session-based keys.
