I've been drafting a letter to my MP this morning. The problem, as I
see it, in writing a lobbying letter is to:
(a) not invoke claims that an end-position is being ``intended'' which
is not actually manifest (you end up sounding like someone who lines
their hat with foil);
(b) avoid claims of vast expense and complexity of implementation ---
the issue is that these powers are wrong in principle, and were the
government to (hypothetically) write the industry a blank cheque to fund
them they would _still_ be wrong;
(c) without remotely accepting that ``those with nothing to hide have
nothing to fear'' is a reasonable position, find a way to actually
address that point with concrete examples. For my Birmingham MP, I was
going to point out that the local council might be very interested to
know who had emailed their MP during the housing transfer referendum.
