[copy protection vs DRM]
I can make 1000 copies of encrypted data and give them away. A
course-grained DRM system (e.g. DVD's CSS) can't stop me, because the
keys are per DVD decoder manufacturer, not per consumer (I think). A
fine-grained DRM system (e.g. PGP) doesn't stop copies being made, but
limits their usefulness.
Macrovision is an Analog Rights Management system, if you like, where
the signal degradation actually does act as a form of copy protection.
