In fact the majority of money for the police comes from central taxation.

The proportion varies around the country but in my area the figures are
£100m central and £40m local.

I know a lot about this issue because I have a dispute with the government
about how Police Authorities work.

In my area completely unelected officials have had a big say in increasing
Council Tax bills for policing by nearly 70% over three years with a 33%
increase last year. This confirms my previous experience that it is always
easy to spend other peoples money so I simply don't accept that the need to
pay has any real impact on such authorities since they will just pass the
bills onto us.
