| board any domestic airline flight in the US. Many states issue "non-driver"
| driving licences for ID purposes and have done so since the 1980s if not

It has not (at least before last week) been a legal requirement to
show ID to fly. The regulations were put in place by airlines to
prevent people from arbitraging their practice of making a one way
ticket cost $10 less than a round trip.
If you refused to show ID, your bags would be subject to manual
search, and you would be hassled and harrassed. Perhaps this was a
clever attempt at unsettling you, but I suspect it was unofficial.
