| Multi-purpose smartcard at the centre of =A3250m reform...
|
| Smartcard technology is a key component of controversial new
| measures for the handling of asylum seekers in the UK announced
| today.
|
| Asylum seekers will be required to carry an ID smartcard that will
| contain personal details -- such as a photograph and fingerprint --
| as well as acting as a cash card to replace the current voucher =
system.
| The implementation of the smartcard technology will allow a closer
| monitoring during all stages of the asylum process -- from arrival to
| accommodation or deportation.
|
| The new system for processing asylum seekers will cost =A3250m and
| will begin to be rolled out in January 2002.
