I feel kind of defeated like that sometimes as well.  But is there an
alternative to plugging away at these kinds of points?

Since RIP I haven't written many letters for that very reason.
However, I wrote one to the Observer yesterday.  I have the idea that
writing letters at the moment may make the difference between a defeat
and a police state...
