It used to be the same going into Gib from Spain by foot - the border 
guards used to sit uninterested at one end of an office and we filed past a 
counter about twenty feet away from them - they hardly ever even looked up. 
We experimented with all sorts of things - red squares of paper, cigarette 
packets, magazines, a photo of our girlfriends - everything passed.

The Spaniard on the way out was far more scrutineering though.
