It depends on how you define "need". I have no problem with id'ing
myself to a bank from whom I desire credit for example however I have
a *major* problem with passport control to leave the UK/police/any
other facet of HMG. If I want to id myself I will, I would object
strongly
to having to.
For most purposes other than the police state we've become, ID is not
needed.
