Yeah - I used to use slurp with demon, and it used NEWNEWS.
In fact, their servers were optimised for issuing NEWNEWS requests.

However I may request the list of articles that are new in a number
of groups, and then download a dodgy one just 'cause it was cross
posted.
Also message-id's are supposed to be unique - this being why request
by message-is works, and I've occasionally seen references to articles
mentioned in URL's as "news:<message-id>". In this instance you'd be
fetching an article without any group reference.
