I think you're remembering Simon Watkin (from the Home Office) giving
the address of 419@spring39.demon.co.uk as being a suitable place to
report "Nigerian 419" scams to [though these days, they seem to have
spread out from Nigeria somewhat - so maybe "Advance Fee Fraud" is the
better name after all].

What Simon (and others) may not know is that the NCIS West African
Organised Crime Section (WAOCS) who live behind the spring39 address are
no longer interested in collating info.

They used to respond with a Word document (!) that said:

>Thank you for forwarding the advance fee fraud e-mails (otherwise known
>as Nigerian or 419 letters) to our department. We use them for
>analytical and statistical purposes and to establish which areas of the
>population are currently being targeted.

and now respond (in MIME multipart/alternative HTML & ASCII - which is
probably an advance)

>These emails are very common, and it is possible that you may receive
>another at some future point. Please do not send it direct to NCIS, but
>transmit it direct to your local fraud squad, who will action it as
>appropriate.

So your local fraud squad are apparently the place to go.... and I'm
sure they'll be ever so happy to receive your report :-)

Please let us know how it goes -- it might make the HO even more keen to
create an online reporting system (cos it's more efficient to discard
such things centrally than in 60 odd different places).

BTW: it's usually worth reporting the drop address back to the ISP who
hosts it (usually yahoo.com in my recent experience). Slows the senders
down just a tad :)
