I think displays of occasional tetchiness in postings/replies are
inevitable on a list such as this. It is all the more difficult when you
cannot sense or add meaningful non-verbal cues.

Nor is some display of emotion necessarily out of place; cold detachment
and cynicism can make a contribution look codescending or insincere.

I suspect we share some similar views and concerns but like you I would
not wish my contributions to be seen as a personal attack on Simon
Watkin or anyone else.

Many of the lurkers are constrained by their role/place of work from
taking an active part in the list. However I do know that some find it
informative and useful and I have been grateful for unexpected but
helpfull off-line replies from a few of them.
