This happens even on smaller scale emergencies.  I still remember
quite strongly trying to get hold of my boyfriend after the Soho pub
bombing (I knew he'd be in the area at the time, I was still in the
office).

It was a very scary half hour before he could get from Soho to
somewhere where he could get a mobile phone reception (Bank, as it
happens!) -- there was no signal in a large chunk of Central London
for several hours, ISTR friends mentioning...
