A quick scan through the `Security Reviews' archives yields:

{\bf \noindent 041633 \ \ \ `Using four-prime RSA in which some of the bits are
specified'\\}
SA Vanstone, RJ Zuccherato, {\em Electronics Letters v 30 no 25 (8/12/94) pp
2118--2119\\}

The authors propose that when moving from 512-bit to 1024-bit RSA, users should
pick four prime factors rather than two for downward compatibility reasons, and
claim that over 250 bits of the modulus can be fixed in order to save storage.
