But the attitude of the Charles Clarke on Wednesday to people who
regarded the endless recitation of the unholy trinity of ``money
laundering, drug dealing and paedophilia'' as amusing (a rather
school-masterly ``I don't know what you're laughing about, boys, this is
_very_ _serious_'') indicated to me that if the choice is between
cracking down on what they see as a major criminal problem and, say,
assisting the unemployment of thousands of people around where I live,
they'll take the former route.

Call me naive, but I thought drug dealing required the dealing of drugs
and paedophilia required the abuse of children. It seems that
harrassing people who talk about X is standing as a substitute for
arresting people who _do_ X, on the assumption that the two sets have a
large intersection. I don't really understand how money laundering
affects me: I certainly don't sit up at nights worrying about it.
