I find that very hard to believe. My wife recently wanted to start
using email (a mere sixteen years after we met, and ten years after
we've had email at home), and because it was the easiest thing to do I
just got her an account on mailandnews.co.uk and told her to use a web
browser. Means she can get at the same mailbox from work, too. It
turns out that _all_ her non-geek friends, mostly with non-geek
partners, and using similar solutions. Since the effort involved in
migrating such services to https: is marginal, I'd suggest a lot of mail
is outside the POP3 environment. Moreover, we provide IMAP-over-SSL
support for our users, and we're not alone in that.
