Part of the HO's defence of RIP seems to be that the authorities should
be trusted not to misuse their powers for political reasons.
>From our local paper:
"Kingston University student Julie Ann Davies, targetted by Special
Branch for her alleged involvement with MI5 renegade David Shayler, has
left the university because of stress.
Miss Davies was originally released without charge under police bail to
reappear at Kingston Police Station this month [June] but has now been
notified that her bail has been extended until August.
The 36-year-old engineering student was arrested by Special Branch
officers on the Roehampton Vale campus on suspiciaon of contravening the
Official Secrets Act.
Miss Davies has never been officially informed of the reason for her
arrest and will have to wait two more months to find out".
Another career casually wrecked by abuse of a stupid Act. It is a useful
reminder that all police powers included in any bill, including RIP,
will be misused sooner or later, and no-one will ever be accountable for
their
misuse.
