It occurs to me that the DTI has two distinct roles in crypto policy:

1. As the lead department in setting an overall position on behalf of all
governments departments.

2. As the department that identifies and fights for the policy it sees as
necessary to support UK commerce and industry.

In the light of Nigel's comment I wonder if he would be prepared to state
the DTI position in respect of item 2.  Is it fair to read Nigel's comment
as implying that the DTI position is that all such controls should be
removed?

I would also be interested in his view about which department within UK
government 'carries the banner' for the privacy and security rights of UK
citizens.
