In addition to what you wrote, it offends me as someone involved in 
electronic commerce that the fantasy continues to be propagated that 
electronic commerce needs a PKI.  I am not alone in this realization, BTW.  
When we who do electronic commerce get together, there is general agreement. 
This notion seems to come out of the heads of people in the CA business (or 
in government), rather than those actually moving money over the web.
