Of course, the real subversion was amongst the security
services' own staff. Then --- and, one suspects, now ---
the security services had a loyalty to class that overrode
any loyalty to country, and allowed them to whitewash
traitors who had the Right Background (Philby, McLean,
Burgess, Blunt) while giving long sentences to those that
didn't (Fuchs, Blake). That in the end is what makes me
most cyncial about the intelligence services: their open
support of traitors makes one assume that they, themselves,
would rather have seen the country sold down the river than
a member of their own class sent to jail.
The security services may claim to serve the country, but
they really serve the establishment. That's why we should
take great pleasure in exposing them: their main task is
actually counter to the interests of the vast majority of
the people in this country.
