It's difficult to know exactly what the problem is for you, but if you've tried the two suggestions above and they don't work, I suggest you try downloading Olly Betts's AddToPath utility that you can get from here: Copy it inside "$.!Boot.Library" and try re-booting both !TeX and !TeXFonts (that is, re-run their !Boot files). Hopefully this will do the trick. I've been meaning to make suitable changes to the original archives but haven't yet got around to it. Hopefully this will do the trick. OK, thanks very much for your suggestion. I tried !Boot.Library and that didn't work, but !Boot.Library.RiscOS did, in that it allowed the directory containing the new 32-bit ArmTeX to be opened without the AddtoPath error. However, trying to run any of my LaTeX files (which all have a big red cross through them!!) produces the error that an application that loads that sort of file hasn't been found, despite the new !TeX and !TeXFonts being visible in an open window at the time, plus (for good measure) being Filer_Booted too.:-) I tried putting the AddtoPath file from inside !TeXFonts.Utilities inside !Boot.Library.RiscOS instead - same result. Ho hum...I suppose this is meant to run on a Risc OS 4.39 Risc PC and not just on the Iyonix, is it...? > I've been meaning to make suitable changes to the original archives but > haven't yet got around to it. Perhaps best to wait for this. I still have the old armTeX which works OK, plus the old Graham Toal one kicking around somewhere... I tried !Boot.Library and that > didn't work, but !Boot.Library.RiscOS did, in that it allowed the directory > containing the new 32-bit ArmTeX to be opened without the AddtoPath error. Sorry; I hadn't noticed you were using a RiscPC, and I'd forgotten that the RO 4 boot might be different. If you no longer get the error, it sounds like you've found the right place for AddtoPath! > However, trying to run any of my LaTeX files (which all have a big red > cross through them!!) produces the error that an application that loads > that sort of file hasn't been found, despite the new !TeX and !TeXFonts > being visible in an open window at the time, plus (for good measure) being > Filer_Booted too.:-) There is a good explanation for this: your files were probably created for an older version of armTeX. Since then, the file type assignment for TeX and LaTeX files has changed (I think they were changed when an official filetype was assigned to them). This is why there's a big cross through them! The new filetypes should not have this cross. You'll have to SetType all of your files again if you want them to work with this latest version of armTeX. To do this, click menu on each of your LaTeX files, follow the menu "File 'name' >" and then "Set type >" and enter "LaTeX" and hit return. Alternatively you can enter the new filetype number which is "ACA" (in hex) in the same way. You'll have to do something similar for any TeX files you have as well, changing them to "TeX" or "CE5". If you have a lot of files to do, I've placed a couple of utilities here that might make the process a bit easier: Just run the two applications contained in the archive and drag the files that need changing to the iconbar icons to change them to the correct type. > I tried putting the AddtoPath file from inside !TeXFonts.Utilities inside > !Boot.Library.RiscOS instead - same result. Yes, the two problems aren't related I'm afraid, so you'll have to make both the AddToPath and the SetType changes to get a fully working system with this latest release. With the official assignment of new filetypes, the latter change was inevitable I'm afraid, and the transition was always going to be a bit problematic. > Ho hum...I suppose this is meant to run on a Risc OS 4.39 Risc PC and not > just on the Iyonix, is it...? To be honest, although the 32-bit release *should* work on a RiscPC, it doesn't offer anything over the last 26-bit version (version 3). However, it sounds like you have an older version than that, so you'd be wise to upgrade to at least version 3. From a personal point of view it would also be nice to have confirmation that the new system does work on a RiscPC, if you can get it to work :) Regards, David -- Website: http://www.flypig.co.uk From owner-mailman@chiark.greenend.org.uk Sun Nov 14 16:35:51 2004 Return-path: Envelope-to: riscos-tex@chiark.greenend.org.uk Received: from pD95DB816.dip.t-dialin.net ([217.93.184.22] helo=roma.localnet) by chiark.greenend.org.uk (Debian Exim 3.35 #1) with esmtp (return-path sbellon@sbellon.de) id 1CTNLz-0000iT-00 for riscos-tex@chiark.greenend.org.uk; Sun, 14 Nov 2004 16:35:51 +0000 X-SAUCE-Notice: (chiark.greenend.org.uk) Irritated 3179ms (delays likely) with pD95DB816.dip.t-dialin.net [217.93.184.22] Received: from pD95DB816.dip.t-dialin.net ([217.93.184.22]) by chiark.greenend.org.uk (SAUCE v0.8.1) with esmtp id sauce-8484-1100450-1; 14 Nov 2004 16:35:51 +0000 (GMT) Received: from [192.168.0.100] (helo=iyonix) by roma.localnet with esmtp (Exim 3.36 #1 (Debian)) id 1CTIyk-00010g-00 for ; Sun, 14 Nov 2004 12:55:34 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Stefan Bellon To: riscos-tex@chiark.greenend.org.uk Date: Sun, 14 Nov 2004 12:55:46 +0100 Subject: Re: Add to Path problem: (was Re: 32-bit LaTeX) Message-ID: <4d0db171efsbellon@sbellon.de> In-Reply-To: References: <3abd5b0a4d.llewelld@flypig.e7even.com> <4d0ad44f7fsbellon@sbellon.de> <3f64e70c4d.Richard@risctex.blueyonder.co.uk> User-Agent: Pluto/3.03h (RISC-OS/5.08) POPstar/2.05 X-Request-PGP: http://www.sbellon.de/gpg.asc X-PGP-ID: 05360CB9 / 55DB 48FE BA59 7BA0 2B9D 4822 38C5 EC21 0536 0CB9 X-URL: http://www.sbellon.de/ Content-Type: text/plain X-RBL-Warning: (dnsbl.sorbs.net) Dynamic IP Address See: http://www.dnsbl.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?217.93.184.22 Sender: riscos-tex-admin@chiark.greenend.org.uk Errors-To: riscos-tex-admin@chiark.greenend.org.uk X-BeenThere: riscos-tex@chiark.greenend.org.uk X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: TeX on RISC OS machines List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: Richard Smith wrote: > However, trying to run any of my LaTeX files (which all have a big > red cross through them!!) OK...right...I see that, although interestingly if I fire up my old armTeX old my LaTeX files (type &2a8) don't have a cross - presumably because the old armTex is supplying the filetype association. Thanks /very/ much for the settype utilities which work a dream, that was kind of you. Ah...I must have missed this. Thank you so much for repeating the information here, which has allowed it to COMPILE...YAY!! :-))) The filer_opendir texbin: didn't work but I found the files and increased the wimpslot as described. It's not finding my own style files, even though I've copied them into !TeX.texmf.local I thought at first it was because they were lacking the /sty extension, but adding that hasn't helped. Isn't that the right place for them? Big progress today - many thanks for all the helpful advice received. Isn't that the right place > for them? You've got the right place, but you also need to set up the 'local' directory with the same structure as the directories above it. So, you'll need to create 'tex.latex' folders inside your 'local' folder and place your /sty file inside there (assuming it's a latex style file). The final pathname should be something like: !TeX.texmf.local.tex.latex.mystyles/sty Incidentally, it will also pick up style files kept in the same folder as the LaTeX file being compiled, so if the above doesn't work, you should be able to do this instead. For those still having trouble getting things to work it might be worth downloading this latest version. For simplicity there's no upgrade version (you have to download the whole lot again), but if anyone would find it easier (e.g. if you're on dialup), I'd be happy to create a very small upgrade archive. So there's nothing particularly ARM-related in armtex, and the only merit it has for other platforms is it's a fairly simple, if old, build of tex. But the distribution itself is rather out of date. But it doesn't have pdftex in it. I think you'll need a recent web2c-based distribution for this. How Unix-like is the EPOC build environment? If it's POSIX compliant you should be able to build something like tetex, though it's a fairly major process. I'm not sure the memory in the Psion would be up to it though. Alternatively there's a web2c-based package of pdftex on CTAN at: http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/systems/web2c/ which is much smaller. I don't know how much else you'll need though. Particularly getting a suitable texmf tree and convincing kpathsea (the library that handles locating files in tex) to understand the right paths can be a bit tricky. You could also try: http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/systems/tex2pdf/ which seems to be a Windows take on the same package. Possibly web2c isn't required, but I haven't looked at it in great detail. There don't seem to be too many small TeX distributions which include pdftex, possibly since it's not part of Knuth's distribution and is rather large in itself. Though I'm not particularly clued-up on alternative distributions, I'm afraid. If you really want to compile armtex, I imagine it would just mean creating yourself a new set of Makefiles and there are a few core files which have RISC OS code in them. [replying to Martin's private mail via the list since this is of wider interest] I don't agree with that - if I want to report a bug I shouldn't have to subscribe to the list. In this case the list is set up with quite stringent filters which block 90% of spam at the SMTP stage and also only accepts messages that are explicitly To: or CC: the list. But whilst this is the first spam to the list in 6 months, no spam filters are foolproof. It's unfortunately a repetitive spam. So I've done the next best thing which is for only members to have posting rights, and anyone else posting gets held for moderation. I've also disabled the spam filters since they're not necessary if the list is closed. If you post from a non-subscribed address when I approve the message I'll add you to the list of authorised senders so you can then post freely in future. Note this may happen because your From: or Sender: headers aren't the same as the address you've subscribed with, even if they end up in the same mailbox. Mailman doesn't allow me to set a nice 'pending moderation' message explaining all this so don't be confused if it tells you 'the list is moderated' or something like that. I have just generated a Tex file from TechWriter (I have the most up to date version). This I can view on RISC OS using the application !DVI to convert it to a dvi file. This same dvi file renders fine on a windows wachine using something called YAP. However when I emailed the original Tex file to a friend he could not get in and edit it. I suspect this is because he actually wants a Latex file. Can TechWriter Tex files be viewed using Windows ? (If so, what package do I use ? ) How do I provide him with a Latex file that he can edit ? (I'm hoping I can convert the Tex file to a Latex one) Reards, Martin Hansen. IIRC, mikTeX is the best Windows package. Your friend will need to look up how to use a TeX rather than LaTeX file, but it should be possible. All TeX packages use the same core code (and even have the same bugs!). Ten years ago I edited a book in LaTeX on my RISC PC, using Artworks to read and write epsf graphics. There were no compatibility problems at all, other than getting the directory structure right. > > How do I provide him with a Latex file that he can edit ? > (I'm hoping I can convert the Tex file to a Latex one) > Some of us have been trying for years to persuade Martin to get Techwriter to export LaTeX, but there always seem to be higher priorities. Meanwhile I can supply you with a Perl script that makes a reasonable (but far from perfect) job of converting Techwriter TeX into LaTeX. Email me privately if you would like a copy. You will need to install Perl 5 on your machine if you have not already got it. I regularly use this script to write research papers.
