Hi,

Niall was wondering if Debian would have be turning up en-masse to the
UKUUG, and whether we'd like to use a BoF room, or a table-top for selling
T's or if any of you fancied getting on your hind legs and giving a talk
(you get to attend the conference and your Hotel and formal dinner paid
for if you do that, so it's not a bad gig)

BTW I should declare my interest: I'm on the UKUUG council.

The announcement is attached:
------------------------------------------------------------

                      Summer Technical Conference 2009
                UKUUG -- the UK Unix and Open Systems User Group
                           www.ukuug.org

The UKUUG is a user group that traditionally covered Unix, but over
the years had embraced Linux, all the BSDs and other free or
open-source software irrespective of platform -- Perl, database
systems etc.

We have two conferences a year:

1. The Spring conf is usually a "LISA"
   (Large Installation Systems Administration) event: see
	http://www.ukuug.org/events/spring2009/

2. The Summer conf, which is more general. We want to expand this
   year's conference:
	* wider audience
	* more varied topics, with multiple streams
	* other user-groups and projects involved, running
	  their own streams, or even sub-events or
	  mini-conferences in parallel.
   Other groups -- large or small -- can have most of the grunt work
   done for them, and everybody gains by having a large and
   more interesting event, with more choice.

What we want from you
---------------------

We need people or user groups who can identify and attract
important/ good/ interesting/ amusing speakers in their stream, or run
workshops or tutorials, or publicize the event to related user groups,
developers etc.. We can provide the infrastructure (bookings,
venue, organization ...).

Topics
------
in alphabetical order, and incomplete -- add any you think suitable:

* Accessibility
* Audio and media -- Ardour, Jack, MythTV, ...
* Content Management Systems -- Drupal, Joomla, (Moodle), ...
* Databases -- Ingres, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase ...
* E-Mail servers and client -- Exim, etc.
* Education
* Embedded / robotics
* Games
* Networking and network management
* Operating systems -- BSD, Linux, MacOS, OpenSolaris, ...
* Phone platforms -- Android, Asterisk, OpenMoko
* Programming languages and tools -- Lua, Perl, Python, ...
* Security
* TeX and LaTeX typesetting (for mathematics and general use)
* Web programming
* X

Date and venue
--------------

Birmingham, Fri/Sat/Sun 7/8/9=Aug-2009.

The venue is flexible: we can run several workshops or talks in
parallel, with a big enough lecture theatre for plenary sessions.
Currently the plan is to hold tutorials on the Friday, with the main
conference streams on Saturday and Sunday.

What next?
----------

* Reply if you're interested (or if you really are not :-)
* Join in a conference call on Thu 5-Mar-2009 at 10:00.
  Phone 020 7043 6552 to join in.
  (I hope to send reminder about 30 mins beforehand.)
* Add your ideas to the wiki, at
	http://summer2009.ukuug.net
