I patched manually before as well.

Here it was about a review of the updated package as I hope it may help 
the DD who sponsors it into Debian. Time is a scarce resource for many of 
us these times, especially for DDs.

Also in the package one does not directly patch the .meta stuff as far as I 
understand it is auto-generated from "debian/runit-services.runit".
