Hi,

Here's a summary of where Ian and Peter are with elogind for buster,
posted here with their permission.

By way of context:

The problems are mainly around integration of sysvinit with desktoppy
stuff, e.g. the login1 DBus interface;

Relevant bugs include
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=909192
      Installing sysvinit-core removes mate-desktop-environment
          for example.  That bug has an irc transcript in it of some
            discussions
              about missing pieces.

Elogind (originally developed for GuixSD, the OS distribution of GNU
Guix) is intended to solve a number of these problems. Devuan already
have a packaged version of elogind.
