In 1990 sixteen gay men were enjoying a bit of consensual SM when the
British police broke in and arrested them. A court case was held,
"Crown vs Spanner", which resulted in some of the men being imprisoned.
The Tops were convicted of GBH (causing Grevious Bodily Harm) and the
Bottoms with aiding and abeting GBH (by consenting to it)! This
outrageous judgement spawned a campaign group, "Countdown on Spanner".
Supported by Liberty, (a national campaign group for civil liberties),
the group contested the result in the House of Lords. After much
publicity the Law Lords upheld the decision by 3 votes to 2.
The group's aims are:
- To raise 100,000 pounds towards the cost of taking the case
to the European Court of Human Rights
- To encourage a network of SM support groups across Britain
- To promote sadomasochism as a valid sexuality in its own right
The group meets on the last Sunday of every month at:
Central Station,
37 Wharfdale Road,
London N1.
(The meeting is in the pub's upstairs room.)
Time: 7:30pm - 8:30pm
Nearest Tube Station: King's Cross
